Network topology has four types. Before we start discussion about network topology, first let me tell you what is network? And what is network topology? When two or more pc are connected to each other we can say there is a network among those pcs. For make a network we must require one of the interconnected devices which is available in real world and one of the basic network topology. Switch router and hub are the interconnected devices. Network topology defines that in which fashion number of pcs or devices are connected to each other.
TYPES OF NETWORK TOPOLOGY
Suppose in one network there are 3 pcs and they are connected using mesh topology it means they all are connected to each other directly. There is no indirect link between two pcs. If there is n pcs in a network then every pc is connected to other n-1 pcs. So total n*(n-1) link is requires but it is full duplex connection and because of this in mesh topology total (n*(n-1))/2 links are required. This topology is also known as point to point topology. This topology has advantage and disadvantages both. Disadvantage of point to point topology is we require more number of links for make a network. Advantage of point to point topology is that if any link is broken then it does not affect the whole network.
Star topology requires one hub and number of pcs for make a network. Here in star topology hub is connected to every pc. In star topology every pc are connected to each other via hub. There is no direct link between any two pc. If any two pc want to communicate to each other in star topology then they must have to do communication via hub. Hub is interconnected device through which all pc are connected. In this network topology if we want to connect n pc then we must require n links. It means star topology requires less number of links with compare to mesh topology. If any pc is disconnected from hub then it does not affect to entire network and if any link is broken then we can easily find that which link is broken? But if hub fails then it affects the entire network.
In ring topology every pc are connected via repeaters as shown in figure. It makes a ring of pcs as per its name. In ring topology point to point connection is used. If any pc goes down while it is connected into network then it discards entire network. Here in ring topology communication is done via repeaters.
Suppose you want to connect n number of pcs using bus topology then you must require one backbone line and n drop lines. In bus topology every pc is connected to backbone line with use of drop lines and tapes. In this topology if any drop line is broken then it does not affects the entire network but if backbone line fails then it discards the entire network.
